    Glue them in place with indoor/ outdoor thinset. Then, point them with regular mortar.. A little thought on laying out the courses before you begin will go along way toward a great looking job . Also, spacers help a bunch .

    Thanks for taking the time to reply. I quite like this idea. A couple of things spring to mind. If I wrapped the flue in plastic but maybe also something thin between the plastic and the flue, this would create a space slightly larger than the flue when I removed it, to allow for expansion - I wouldnt...
