Re: Planned Route 66 trip for 2014

    Neill,

Several years ago I was working on a pipeline that paralleled Route 66 in California. There is a funky little town called Oatman were wild burros come and go as they please and some of the old original road construction still exist just outside of town. Worth a short stop and bring a carrot to feed the burro. Have a great time tracing one of our historic roadways.

      Hi Russel,
I have the EZ book on Route 66 and read about the wild burro's (I think these are a type of donkey or at least a family member). I dare say that there will be numerous places that will sell carrots to feed the residents.
There are so many special places and experiences to be had that I am really looking forward to starting the journey.
I have a mate who does some work with me and he is over there at present and collects his motor home to do just parts of 66 and we intend to meet on the road in later May

        Neill,

BTW, that is a nice looking ride you have there. Seems like you also had an cool looking car too, big boy toys. Have a great "iron butt" ride along Route 66.

What is life if you don't have a few toys! In fact I still have 2 clubmans, Robin Hood and a bright yellow Dax Rush. Bought both over in a container from the UK, finished the Robin Hood ready for inspection and rego, then for sale. Yet to finish the Dax, will be my toy, plenty of get up and go to boot. The Harley, well that wasn't planned but will be put to use until I get sick of it or my son gets his license and takes it over or inherits it.

Re: Planned Route 66 trip for 2014

Neil, I am about 12 miles off of route 66 if you would care to indulge in some "chat and coffee" along the way. We are just east of St. Louis, MO and southeast of Edwardsville, IL, near the beginning of your trip. Check your itinerary. We would love to have you stop in and visit. I am not sure how the private message (PM?) stuff works on this site but let me know if you are interested. Our San Marzano tomatoes are worth checking out if you are interested. Let me know.

Re: Planned Route 66 trip for 2014

                      Hi Dusty,
I'll be sure riding it to LA but not much further. I won't be getting any higher up in California than Morro Bay as time is not on my side and i already have 3 side trips arranged plus one visit. I leave the US 21 June so at this stage, I can't really see much free time as I plan on 25-30 days for the Mother Road with no time for extras as I will only have a 31 day permit (T-tag) to ride the bike without having to register it. This would be difficult as I'm not living in then US and the permit was the ideal way to go.
I'll see what happens and if I get time I will email you.
Thanks for the offer, it is greatly appreciated, and I will take you up time permitting.

                      Cheers.

Neill, don't worry about your permit expiring. We have people living here until death without a green card. If you are going North is would be a shame not to do the extra miles and go to San Fran. If you make it there, might as well see Dusty, then head east to Nevada :-)

Every police car here in South Australia have a computer that reads number plates and checks them against government records and the fine for unregistered vehicles is very significant, they also check for owners who have outstanding fines and license suspensions, etc, everything that will add to the revenue raising that they pursue.
I will be pushing to get to LA with my detours before I stop riding and I leave the states 21 June for home, where I have too much work waiting for me to commence. Had I done my research earlier, I might have tried to register the bike and travel a bit further but maybe in a couple of years doing it all again.

Don't rush it. Take the time to enjoy each and every one of those detours. You've got plenty of time to get in all the great rides that are over here .
