Re: Best of the Month November 2007

I've got to nominate Ken's Keystone. It's innovative, simple and practical!
It should be in the Pompeii construction book. I struggled with my last few rows and I ended up pounding the last two bricks in until I of course crumbled them and had to piece them together with mortar His way is so much better than the tiny, misshaped, things we call keystones. Great work Ken!

I want to nominate Ken's clean floor idea. Tape and paper goes a long way to keeping your oven clean and making it easier at the end. Hey, his oven is cleaner than my office. :-)

Too many categories in play here...but I guess of all these excellent ovens, cleverness, technique, and resourcefulness...Les' tight almost gauged dome...Ken's clean oven floor...but that keystone(s)...that did it for me...I nominate Ken as the best of November...

True about the numerous categories. Maybe we can tighten the December round. This is a first month and should be fun and exciting.

Re: Best of the Month November 2007

I wasn't comfortable with this competition from the start. The thing I love about this forum is the help we all get from each other. I have watched the ovens evolve from the basics to who knows what. It's all about sharing the good and the bad. With that said - I vote for Ken; his oven is obviously WELL constructed, extremely clean (dear to my heart), and most importantly, damn near done. James - maybe you should just throw a bag of flour to ever completes an oven, just a thought. For all I know, my approach may crumble with the first fire - I suppose if that were to happen, and I won a bag of flour, I could use it making paper projects in the insane asylum

Come on Les. Don't kill the gameplan. This is only for recognition to all those doing such great work, making great sacrifices, and earning friendships along the way. I say, if it goes sour, it will go away. We all have grown to respect each other and can improve upon this. Think about all those shows, experiences that are tough the first time around, but grow into something special.

Please lets not let this go sour...everyone on this site in my opinion has done great things getting started and doing a project such as a brick oven...I remember saying "I can't do this!" and then at the end saying "I did this? I did it!"..not a bleeding heart liberal here but we are all winners here and there certainly can be no losers...so long as we don't lose the lesson...

Re: Best of the Month November 2007

Les, even if it sours AND crumbles, you still have my vote. As I mentioned before, you have stuck to the program I originally started out with. Although I think I did a pretty good, tight, low mortar build....it is not in the same league as your precision oven. I did things "close", but just couldn't stick it out through the entire build.....you've done as near perfection as is possible and I seriously respect that.
I wasn't too thrilled with this entire concept in the beginning either; sounded too much like a contest. Now after seeing some of the nominations it seems more about showing appreciation and admiration for the the various ideas and process variations we have each used. It is very evident that every builder puts their own "spin" on the concept. Pretty cool if you ask me and there is nothing wrong with us recognizing the "cool" things our fellow builders have done.
Now, if anyone stands up holding a sign saying "VOTE FOR ME", my tune will change (as I'm sure everone elses will too). Until then, lets enjoy the nominations and the reasons why. I think it is just beginning to get fun.

And seriously - it ain't gonna crumble

Yeah, as long as its not all completely serious.

I've got some more nominations: I'd like to nominate Sarah because she's a fellow female oven builder and she's doing a great job and she's locked in the same struggle against oncomming winter that I am, only in far harsher conditions.

And I'd like to nominate the picture of Dave's re-enacted fall, cos its so cool and I just have to laugh every time I imagine him lying back down on that floor going "Ok, now where was the chair again? And my foot went through here and I'll twist my arm round a bit here to make it look more dynamic and..."

And I'd like to nominate Carl's stand. Because it's beautiful.

And I'd really like to put in the relevant pics here, but I can't work out how... Help please?

When you make an entry in the forum, directly above the box where you type there are a group of buttons. You hit the button that looks like this:

and you will get a dialog box that looks like this:

You paste the URL (http://...) of the picture location in the slot, click OK and it inserts the IMG data for your image, which you have already uploaded somewhere (like the FB photoplog), into your text. If you want to see if it works, hit "preview post" or "go advanced" and you will see a preview of what it looks like.

Get to know those little icons. If you highlight a section of text and hit the one that looks like this:

it will bring up a similar dialog box, that will let you link any website to the highlighted words, like "FB photoplog" above.

James, we should keep this post at the top of Forno Bravo Forum. When it disappears within the many threads people may not know about it, or miss out on this exciting opportunity. We have many oven finished this month, or are finishing, and with great opportunity for many areas to vote. 2 cents worth.

I nominate rlf5 for his( I think) exceptional work toward great sourdough bread.

You can see the wonderful job done throughout his "playing with sourdough" thread.

haha! Thanks, but I'm far from exceptional. Just starting out and I have a long way to go. My main reason for building the oven was for bread. Pizza, roasting, etc was just icing on the cake. After I finish the oven, I'll get my sights on a mixer...
