Re: Best of the Month November 2007

Last call for Nominations. I will go over the thread and post the poll tomorrow. If we keep this light and fun, I don't think anyone will feel put out. Plus, we are highlighting some great work.

    You can start voting tomorrow.

Also, we have had recommendations to move the thread. How does the Forum Guidelines section sound?

      Forum Guidelines sounds ideal!

We have used an exclusive accounting firm to tally to results (well, it was me) and hold them confidential until the crucial moment (now), and here are the final nominations. Please remember that this is a very un-scientific counting method.

Check the poll and cast your vote here.

Next month I will work out how to make it all work as one thread. Thanks for your vote.

            James,
When can we nominate for December? I would like to nominate jcg31. He's got one sweet dome finishing up, as well as an improvement on Hendo's Dome Gauge.

Ken, wow! Shouldn't we at least acknowledge those of December (you and others)? December 1st-15th would be my guess, with 16th-31st for polling. Right James?

                James and All,

Didn't want to hijack this thread, so I'll just do the comment within it. Ta da! This is my one thousandth post on the Forum. Since joining, I have noticed a very marked increase in the ability and sophistication not only of the complete ovens being built by members but in the true craftsmanship that's coming to the fore. Congratulations to everybody on that one, and I know I'm not alone in recognizing the trend. What has remained a constant is the extremely civilized tone of the contributors and the genuine willingness to share experience and knowledge, whether it's how to cut a brick or how to cook a turkey. Don't know what it is about the Forno Bravo Forum, but ego seems to take a far back seat to making sure that new builders get off on the right foot and stay that way. Too, I've seen experienced builders coming up with new solutions as new problems or techniques arise. Well done everybody.

Yike, now I have a new title, too!

                  Way to go Jim,

1,000 postings is a great thing -- I can't begin to imagine how much you have helped the community with advise, experience, and humor on bread, ovens and life north of the border. For FB, all I can do is say thanks; and let's keep it going.

                  Build, cook, enjoy.

                    Congrats Jim!

You are always such a big help when builders and bakers need your help.

                    You should be proud!

I'm going to stretch the theme of this thread and nominate CJ for "Best of the past, present, and future".
It is not just his 1000+ posts, it is the content and context of his posts. No one has proven to be as courtious, helpful, and insightfull as Jim.
I'm sure every member has benefited from Jim's wisdom more than once.

                      THANK YOU

Re: Best of the Month November 2007

                          RT, Acoma,

Thanks a lot guys. I try to share what I know but keep my nose out of areas where I've got little to add. It's very satisfying to see, for example, members beginning with bread baking, having problems (like we all have), then solving them, one by one. In fact, it's a bit self serving, because trying to write down what I actually do helps clarify my methods to myself.

It really seems to me that the inherent courtesy in this forum has created an atmosphere that attracts people talented in many areas who are willing to share their knowledge because other members treat them exactly the same way: with respect. That is not the case with far too many sites, where ego and the "I'm better than you are" attitude rule.

Humm, 2K posts? I'll run out of stuff to say.

However, as a community, we should consider the idea of codifying the various threads. The way they're set up, they're like chapters in a book or manual, and a BIG one that's more general and far reaching than the ebooks currently are. Monster job, but worth thinking about.
