    Re: planning questions

Cladding is optional and not necessary if you are building an enclosure.

It would be a disadvantage in one way it would make the oven harder to dry out should it become damp or during the drying/curing process

The short answer to that, for me, is stucco. Stucco is used to protect most Igloo style ovens from the weather. If you are building an Enclosure, you probably want need to include that step.

"Enclosure" is the "politcally correct" name for a Dog House style surrounding which hides a prefectly shaped pompeii oven from view .

Seriously though, an enclosure is a very efficient way to protect a pompeii oven from the elements .

Why the v-Crete . If I built again it would be, dry the dome ,3 in of ceramic then render over that.
that's what i'm thinking about. get extra blanket and skip the v-crete. it's more in material cost, but a lot less time, labor, and potential for mistakes. you'd likely end up w/ better insulation than adding multiple inches of v-crete to boot.

Sometimes we forget about our time and labour . If we were working for someone we would expect a reasonable rate of pay. Yet when we work for ourselves we tend to undervalue our time and labour value.

LOL. My neighbor looked over the fence and asked if I was building a doghouse when I put up my enclosure. Not sure what kind of dog he thought I might have that would need a huge house with a chimney and with a door 4 feet off the ground...

Living close enough to FB to drive there, without a doubt the pompeii90 Oven Kit would be the way to go. Then, follow the plans.

yeah, i'm considering it. it's a bit of a premium, but i don't begrudge them the profit. i'm also looking at a full dome kit. i don't mind doing the labor on a full build, but a dome will be higher quality and i could use that time to knock off the french doors for the patio, the new stucco arch for the gate at the side of the house, etc. or to just sit around and enjoy the oven.
