  • Long time eater, first time builder!!

hi guys, im from Sydney Australia. Great site btw..

Ive been wanting to build one of these things for a while now and have finally got around to doing so.

Ive decided to go for a barrel shaped oven with a flue arch and a door and roughly 1mSq cooking area. Threw down the foundation slab 5 days ago and plan to build on it tomorrow. Il be using refractory bricks for the oven floor and high grade clay solids for the dome.

il be using high temp mortar($35/20kg bag) for the dome bricks. im planning on putting an inch of fireclay/portland mix over the bricks, then fire blanket(one layer) and concrete render finish. should this be enough insulation? im not keen on using vermiculite.

and also ive read abit about the curing/firing process. Should i do this before the fire blanket and final render is put on? or do it once everything is complete?

    any advice/comments will be appreciated..
