  • Sawdust Clayslip Insulator

I am building a cob oven crafted from Kiko Denzer's book and I am up to the insulation stage. I picked up a massive bag of sawdust free from my local woodworking shop and I was wondering if anyone had any luck with insulating with a sawdust clay slip and what their ratio of clay:water:sawdust. Thanks!

    Re: Sawdust Clayslip Insulator

I used about 50:50 clay:sawdust/woodshavings (by bucket full, not by weight ;-) )
I dug the clay from the garden and it was pretty sandy already so didn't add any sand.
first batch we made a very runny clay and then added dry sawdust/shavings gradually, but found it hard work. Subsequent batches we damped the sawdust first then and made the clay less wet.... this mixed in much more easily....
Only finished earlier today, so I'll be leavng it for a week to dry before we know how it works...
