  • cheap pre-cast ovens.... any experience?

I saw a number of cheap pre-formed pizza ovens from Portugal for sale over the weekend & wondered if anyone has ever used one & if they give a reasonable result? I'm about to start my own self build in a very difficult location & I'm tempted to bung one of these in instead, mainly for ease, speed & cost (?280).... I know it isn't the same thing, but it's still tempting!...

Avoid anything with a vent coming out of the top of the dome, like some of the roadside vendor ovens I've seen pictured.

Will do! In fact I've just started excavating stones from the intended location & I think if I do opt for a pre-cast oven I'll go with a FB Cassa, but if space allows I'd like to build my own from scratch.... we'll see!

If that's how you feel, then don't get distracted by cheap deals, but go for it!

I'm sure I will - I know if I don't I'll probably regret it. Still, I'll see how the project progresses - ultimately I'd rather be eating pizzas this summer than sitting around thinking about them whilst I sip my beer! If I was just building it in the open there'd be no contest, but space is limited & the amount of wasted space under the steps means I'd be crazy not to make good use of it.....

            Hello Perry,

I built my own oven with my fathers help. With the help of this forum it can be done even without prior experience. It was a good experience but also took a lot of work and I'm still working on the exterior aspects. If you have a busy life and rather rather chill out with a beer instead of working on your oven I would recommend the other option also.

I recently looked at the ovens from Ebay.fr from portugal and they don't look bad. Some have the vent on the top of the dome and some have it without. You can specify which one you would like (without!!!!)

Please note that with a purchased oven, it will be fully functional when received. But to do it well you still need to build a base, insulate the oven, build the smoke venting area in front, and build an enclosure around it. It will save you some time but there is still some work to do.

What ever option you choose, you will eventually enjoy the home baked pizzas.

            Take care.

            Kosta
