Did you adjust the height of the door opening ?
If not I'd be really interested to see if/how it fires ?

I am 5'6" and my oven floor is at 43 inches, I find that very comfortable for me

the door opening height is almost 10", about 9.75 actually...

and the dome ended up at 17.25

63% of 17.25 is a 10.8675" door opening height, I am at about 56% 9.75" so basically i am about 1" too low. has anyone else been an inch off? i am curious to see if it will make a huge difference before i make any alterations.

I would be making sure that the dome sat on top of the floor rather than the floor inside the dome, otherwise your ratio will be out further. Some mortar between the dome and the floor will also help to get closer to the ideal ratio.

I think a door that is too low/short is better than too high...

but being an inch too low, will it prohibit good air exchange?

                    Joey,
To further explain what I meant, take these three situations (let's say your floor is 3")

                    1. Dome on top of floor
                    9.75 div 17.25 = 56.5%

                    2. Floor inside dome
                    6.75 div 14.75 = 45.8%

                    3. Dome on top of floor with 1" mortar between them
                    10.75 div 18.25 = 58.9 %

My belief is that it is the golden ratio ie. 1:1.618
which is 61.8%, but history says the ancients used 63% which is practically the same.

cool, so just raising the entire thing 1" above the floor will get me alot closer. that is an easy fix!
                          thanks.

now, if i raise it 2" above the floor...
11.75 div by 19.25 = 61.08% which is almost perfect!

You could assemble your mould again and cast a 2" high piece.

Molds were a one time use. How wide are fire bricks?
