Well, here it is "next year", so I thought I would give an update on my oven. It's not yet complete but I've been making good progress. Here are some photos documenting said progress. To start, I removed the temporary clay chimney and installed a 8" Duratech, including a cast refractory manifold. I then framed the enclosure using 20 ga. steel studs, covered with 1/2" Durorock cement board, which will then be stuccoed over. Included are some photos of some cool old cast iron decorative pieces I intent to use.

I completed my oven yesterday, functionally speaking. There's 2" of FB blanket on the lower half of the dome and 3" on the top, all covered with at least 3" of vermicrete. After I'm sure it's completely dry and cured I'll add a layer of stucco and a sealer to get it through the winter. I'm out of spending money now so I'll have to wait til spring to build the enclosure and the bottom stone-face.

Tight! I like the vent. Deeper than most.....cleverly designed.

It's been a few days since I put the 3/4-1" cladding on the dome and finished the vent. I think I'll start building a few small paper fires this week to get a head start on curing. I'll be away all next week, so I'll probably just wrap it in a tarp til I get back. Then I can insulate and start the curing process in earnest.

Very nice looking transition from the arch!! Also, I like the occasional red brick... Kind of a surprise when the dome clears....

I commented on the blackening of the vent and transition.
