Things have to be challenged to prove the design. You will succeed if you want to!

Re: Pompeii Oven with two openings???

The first thought I had when I read this thread, was to have two external openings and one internal opening, achieving this by having the main oven on a turntable arrangement and rotating to whichever side you wish to operate on.!!

      Now theres a challenge.

Re: Pompeii Oven with two openings???

Now that sounds like the sort of challenge i'd love to attempt!!!

Nice metalwork base, with a ball race, very insulated base layer onto this and then build up the oven.

The oven insulation layers would take a bit of thought, but a simple air gap between the oven and then insulating bricks built into a cylindrical form might just do it.

Chimney style would be awkward, but maybe metal fab'd vents folding back to an inverted Y collector, placed at the ovens Top Dead Centre.

The more i roll this one around in my head, the better it seems to be!

Someone please take this one on!!!

Wow! A rotating oven! What an idea!

But completely beyond my skills and intelligence. Based on the replies and advice received here, I intend to proceed with a dual opening oven.
With a cast bung and maybe different height chimney openings, I am sure it will work.

          Gemello is Italian for twin.

I shall call it the 42" Gemello, and we will cook pizza and drink wine and shout and laugh.

Thanks a lot for all your help so far. Keep it coming.

          Best regards,

Taking shape, showing the under-slab storage compartment for inside and outside sections.

Very cool. I think that if you make your openings inside/outside the same dimension - you could cast one refractory door for use on the non-seasonal side - e.g., if you are in summer, it goes inside and vice-versa for winter. That way, you get the best possible heat retention for the oven and only have to move the heavy door a few times a year.

I am aiming for something like this on the inside of the kitchen.
The plan is to have both chimneys on the outside.

                        Piet,

The indoor/outdoor oven concept will be really nice. Keep sending pics of your progress.

Did this ever get completed? I am planning on doing the same thing and would love to hear your thoughts and what you might do different.

                            Hello,
I would love to see the finish product and hear about how it retains heat now that you have been able to use it for a while. Any problems retaining heat?
My husband and I are thinking of doing this and would love to chat. My other concern is that during the summer the oven will heat the whole house and get too hot. What are your thoughts on that?

                            Thanks

Definitely an interesting build. Don't see many houses built like that anymore...
