    Gulf & Chip you both have pointed out a practical option, that of installing something in the hearth base pour to accomodate the 'load in' ...Chip good thought, maybe three stout eye bolts that I can take the trusty sawzall to after it's in place.......Keep up the good work you guys.....I appreciate your critical eye!

      When you pour the supporting slab it is a good idea to slope it slightly downwards towards the corners ie a hump about 1/4" higher in the middle, to avoid water penetrating between the supporting slab and the insulating slab.
      David, that's a good point. One of my future posts was going to be a question regarding how you all handle the inevitable seepage or accumulation of water under your hearth. While I can imagine a little dampness might be OK, standing water could be trouble
