      Jas
hi I live in manly west now that you ask. A quick one regarding firebricks instructions say 200 odd req for 42 inch oven. I'm just about to close the dome have only 180 bricks and it looks like I make it with a few to spare. Ill keep you posted.

Re: new guy wants to build a pompeii oven in brisbane

hi Dave , yeah all is good i've been doing a few other jobs around the yard . ibuilt a 5mt long besser brick vege garden finnished ready for spring .
i thought i could use it to supply the needs of the WFO .ie the tomatoes and herbs for pizza and other tasty treats.
the WFO has progressed to the vermiculite insulation stage and with this weekends weather report , it looks like i may be indoors again and that other thing 'el nino ' predicts more rain ahead.::
I may as well read up on the next stages on forno bravo so i'm ready to go.. .
what have you done with your Wfo ? anything new.
i'm getting photo's together to post....
          thanks mate...

              Dear jaz

As you can see from the photo previous WE HAVE PIZZA.
I built the dome support from plywood an we burnt it out one Fri night
the oven got good and hot and even though no insulatution at this stage we packed in some good hardwood and made a pizza dought and me and the child bride sat with a glass of wine and watch the flames. Makes all the work worthwhile I can tell you. Bloody good pizza too..

I'm rendering as we speak. The insulation with insulating cement was a nightmare. I got some fine pearlite mixed up an experimental batch to find out what is was like. I had the consistancy of rice bubbles and milk and about the same workability couldn't towel it would not stick to any thing. So I set it in an ice cream container to see what it was like dryed and hit the web site.
Armed with some new information and an icecream container of lite cement substance that looked the right stuff I tried again.
Build a cage from heavy pet mesh over the dome cover it with fine chichen wire to prevent "the mixture" from escaping. Well it was like stuffing marshmellows in a hot toaster fast as you got it in there it melted and come out the bottom. And to top it of it rained so I sprayed the remains away with the garden hose and ordered ceramic insulation. I probably could have made it work with a little more patience but what the heck I'm still under budget to date. I'm not trying to put you off using insulated cement but you going to have to be patient or build an inclosure and dry fill. I've got a couple of sheets of 10mm compressed cement sheet which I going to make an oven door ones yours if you want it.
              regards dave

                  Hi all,

New to the site and from brizzy as well. For those who have built the pompeii oven what has been your total costs? I read somewhere that the insulation was $800 for there oven. Was this for the oven or for there house after the insulation rebates? I find that bit rich.

I didn't build a Pompeii, I built a clay dome, but my insulation was still the same. I insulated under the hearth with Hebel bricks, which are $4 each at Bunnings - I think I used 16 of them.

Above the dome I used a roll of rockwool from Total Insulation at Coopers Plains, and 2 bags of vermiculite from a supplier on eBay.

The insulation has proved to work really well, and didn't cost much at all.

Re: new guy wants to build a pompeii oven in brisbane

                        Re costs
Insulation: ceramic insulation is $145 Aust a box which will give you coverage over a 110 cm oven of 25 mm all over and an extra 25 mm over the top down to 200 mm from the bottom.

Total costs to date: still to complete waterproofing reder and colour and cement slab in front. Oven: 110cm pompeii, mesh re enforced cement slab, core filled block base, re enforced surspended slab, 50 mm hebel hearth insulation, 29 per cent silica brick dome, cement/fireclay fireproof mix' ceramic and fiberglass insulation and render igoo......$1250.00
OfF course a lot was free, "steel" most of the "base blocks" and I mixed the cement myself etc but still better than $3900 for the oven kit from Bunnings.

hi Dave, looks like you have made heaps of progress and lots of fun with your oven .
i managed to get the vermiculite insulation done recently (strange stuff), you just never know if that is going to set , it did though .i mixed 10 parts vermiculite 3 parts water 1 part cement and thought "how is this s..t going to work)?? but it did even with our weather here in brisbane.
I'm rapped your finally cooking and enjoying your oven , i will be starting the first course this weekend .
i got in touch with a guy from Thermal Ceramics at Bradman st Acacia ridge , he has all types of insulation we WFO ECENTRICS need , i got a sheet of fb board , mortar and insulation for the dome for later on when i get to that stage ..
Are you going to keep your oven in the igloo look that many others have done of enclose it like a house with a roof?
i 'm hoping to get similar bricks to the house and same tiled roof but that could change...who knows??there are many options.
that sheeting sounds good i will give you a yell to see how to pick it up.
how did you go cutting the bricks ? i spoke to some tradies and they said put a turbo blade on the circular saw??but soak the bricks first to stop all the dust..
any way off to work to pay for this weekend obsession.....

                            Jas
Brick and Dust just you wait. Read the instructions carfully as usual... brought a $ 26 special 115 mm angle grinder from supper cheap as the dust would destroy the internals added a brick blade Ready, Naa.
First brick, a bit of the old sweat... looked like a human laminton . Back again check the instruction again... soak the bricks to keep down the dust.. to easy. Yep it worked but still a lot of dust talked to an old friend ...do not muck around with silica dust and brought a proper cartridge dust mask. Didn't have to don the full gear to often as I did most of the splitting to 1/2 brick with a brick bolster.
Build a full inclosure.... I kinda like the igloo shape and to be perfectly frank I'm not the best brick layer... most of the brick layer to date has not been in a strait line which suits me fine.

Jas sick of the rain yet?
Yep I am too just can't get much done. Domes soaked as it is to damp to seal the dome cause it will not stop raining!!! I mucked around and built a temp door out of hebel and plywood that a guy posted the to me. Cause I was not sure how wet the Guts of the oven was i built a small fire for a couple of hours. Fitted the door 200F and next morning 175F sat afternoon 125F holds it's heat well, but definitly wet, open that door and you can feel the steam rush out. No more pizzas for a while cant see any good out of building a real pizza fire it would probably crack the oven.
Got pee'ed off with the rain and layed a cement slab Sat morning between showers poured cats and dogs that afternoon and the cement had to go off underneath a tarp. Worked though and with rain should be a good piece of cement
I atach a photo brick work looks good in the rain its going to need a good scrub with acid when dry to get ride of the lime scum and bring out the colour. Child bride has picked a great colour for the waterproof render so it should look to bad in the end.
