Re: new guy wants to build a pompeii oven in brisbane

jas - Spent the last week laying foundations, building a brick base (looks like a well) filling it full of rubble (the brother did his part by emptying as many stubbies as possible and throwing them in) and now today finally, I've filled with a vermiculite concrete mix. 5 to 1. I'm with you, strange stuff. It feels like the softfall stuff they put on the ground at the playground. Is this stuff going to harden???

Hey Worb .good to see another Queensland WFO builder.
and it seems that all us Aussies need a few cold beers to help with the build , nothing wrong with that i'm sure i saw them in the plans somewhere in fine print .
yep the vermiculite will set but not like concrete as i have found , it is still strong after many months and i'm up to the dome stage now.so enjoy and use the forum for all your research too when you get stuck on something and you will....

Re: new guy wants to build a pompeii oven in brisbane

Hi Doug, most of us Brisbane WFO builders have bought the fire bricks direct from clay pave and not from a local brick place or landscaper .
They are easy to cut but make sure you soak them in water first as they are very dusty and wear a mask when cutting. i bought a $148.00 tile cutter from trade tools, new blade $28.00. It works fine, two passes and snap it off. Then there is the the angle grinder with the turbo blade for any other cuts. Also go see Krunal shah at thermal ceramics at 416 bradman st acacia ridge.ph 37115666.
        have fun. jas.

i got my bricks from claypave at $2.20 a brick and i cut them with a grinder (tradetools got the tile cutters after i started) i also got the blanket at bellis australia at coopers plains they were a bit cheaper then the others and rated a bit higher

Had a little bo peep this arvo. Yeah, it's getting hard, like jas says, not like concrete though. Yesterday, I would have put my left one on the fact I'd be chipping it out and starting again.

Thank god for the aussie FB forum contingent, and the reassurance they bring to us newbies.

I have been talking to Feild Furnace in Sydney they have an assortment of Fire Bricks. I am going to Sydney to a Conference on the 12th of November to check them out. My local brick supplier suggested that they could get fire bricks for me through Claypave at about $3.50 each what kind and size do you have I would certanly be interested in what you have. I run an Office Furniture Business in Coffs and have trucks bring me stock from Brisbane regular.

The silica brick from Dinmore are 29 per cent silica lit duty bricks rather than the 30 per cent found in the forno bravo kits. They are still exceptable to build an oven from tho. Most of the blokes in QLD have used them. I myself added 25 mm of fireproof cement to the outside before the insulation to increase the thermal mass. you can also get Fireclay from dinmore for your fireproof cement $25 a bag (I used one ). Bricks were $3.30 (includes GST)
Hope to see more of your build

                            Dear Jas
Away this weekend but Ill be checking the forum for progress. You know this is the exciting bit those final chains. Notice the amount of photos of the top of the oven in the forum? I know why most blokes would be chuffed at this stage to see the thing finally stand up. Cutting and placing that finally keystone is a sort of mile stone.
cooking going alright Cooked a leg of lamb last weekend.. long and slow whilst mowing the lawn (weeds) turned out pretty good too... but still got lots to learn.
