Re: Oven dome will not go white
I agree with timo. Elastomeric paint or elastomeric stucco will greatly enhance the "water proofness". Having said that, I would still plan on covering your oven during the raining season.

Elastomeric paint over stucco will make a huge difference. A dry oven is a happy oven. I learned that one the hard way with wet stucco and oven floor, too.

Re: Oven dome will not go white
Thank you to all for help with this issue. I will be using a tarp until I can seal it in the spring next year.
Thanks again.

"What do you seal it with."
I agree with George. For starters, keep your oven covered with a tarp or sheet of poly between uses. Ordinary stucco is not waterproof or even very "water resistant".
Even when dry you need a BIG fire to burn it "white". About 1 cubic foot of wood split down to 3 inch diameter in all at once. You should stuff so much wood in that just about touches the sides and top. The flames should be licking out the door.Last edited by Neil2; 11-14-2010, 04:19 PM.

Re: Oven dome will not go white
What are you doing to prevent rain from entering the front and soaking your oven floor?
So far, it basically seem like you have yourself a wet oven.

Re: Oven dome will not go white
The oven design looks good. It may not be fully dry yet. The fire has to be pretty big like this:

Re: Oven dome will not go white
If it is cementious stucco use something like Prime-A-Pel, but that will not bridge cracks. If it has cracks use an elastomeric paint.

Re: Oven dome will not go white
It was raining last night so I am not sure that it is coming out of the oven. What do you seal it with. I am doing a long fire tonight.

Good, the vent/chimney is fine. In your last picture, I can see dampness coming out of the oven and into the stand. You probably need to seal the whole thing, and maybe try a long medium fire to dry it out.

Re: Oven dome will not go white
How are you protecting the oven from rain? If you used regular stucco as your final layer that can soak up moisture over time and down to your insulating layer.
Find out from whomever built your oven about the insulation used and how much.Last edited by fxpose; 11-13-2010, 09:38 AM.

Re: Oven dome will not go white
Your only option would be to fabricate a sleeve to fit in the flue that would extend down into the oven, but even that may not work.

I think we're getting somewhere now. After a long fire is your dome exterior hot to the touch?Originally posted by rmisale View PostSorry, my friend built it. He made the dome with bricks covered the dome with cement then he put insulation then more concrete lastly stucco.
