voids in morter

I've been using wood shims to hold the bricks as I move along with The Indispensible Tool. This leaves little wedge-shaped holes. How anal do I have to be about filling these? If I leave voids will the air expand and blow out the morter?:
Should I be coating the outside of the dome as I go? Does smoothness count for extra points?
