Re: Now this is just too much

P.S. in fish and chip shops around here, you can by a "fritz fritter" - a slice of bung fritz dipped in beer batter and deep fried.
My liver cries as I walk past the shop.
It's almost up there with deep fried mars bar.

      YUMMY.

As a kid, mum use to do a Sunday night tea using fritz dipped in batter and fried in frypan, along with left over Friday night Leg of Lamb. Lamb bits also dipped into batter and fried.

Mandatory Rosella Tomato Sauce, along with whatever else you wanted. Kind of a free choice meal. Tin of Heinz spaghetti in tomato sauce and toast with an egg was generally the rest.

Wife use to have diced fritz pancakes made by her brother for Sunday lunch.

The best memory of fritz was when Mum took us with her to the butcher where you always got a piece of bung fritz.

      My butcher still does.

      AHHH memories.......

My favourite way is still a fritz and tomato sandwich, with plenty of salt and pepper.

Never had brains in white sauce but crumbed and fried suits me fine. Some trouble finding them these days but the halal butchers have them. Hard to find sheep anything since everything is lamb. Have to get out into the country to find hogget and mutton.

I would like to try the white sauce option.

Reminds me of my boarding school days when we occasionally got crumbed calves brains with bacon and tomato sauce. I loved them and always had plenty because many others couldn't stomach it.

AAH. Grilled sheep brains on toast for breakfast. Ambrosia.
Got so the ol' man had to institute a rule.

Whoever actually got off their backside and gave him a hand to kill the sheep on Saturday got the brains for breakfast on Sunday.

Local restaurant used to do crumbed brains in lemon butter sauce. Gorgeous.

Original recipes for saveloys call for brains.

                      Well,
whilst we are discussing odd ball Aussie tastes, what about the delicacy developed in Adelaide at the original Cowleys Pie Cart, the 'Floater'.
For those less fortunate to know what it is let alone those fortunate to experience one, it is a round or as they later became square meat pie upside down in a large breakfast cereal flat bottom plate with thick green pea soup poured over it until it almost 'floats' then you put a good splosh of bright red tomato suace over it! Yummo! a meal in itself, ultra filling and the absolute best on a cold wintery's night.
Cowleys Pie Cart was a large aluminium catering caravan that would pill up alongside the Adelaide Post Office at around 6.00pm and serve all kinds of people until the early hours of the morning. You would be standing at one of the 2 side servery counters eating your choice of hot 'take away' style meals, pies, pasties, sausage rolls and buns, slices etc. alongside of some drunks or even a couple in dinner suits and ball gowns, real entertainment and great food.
For you food connoissuers, do a Google search for Adelaide pie floaters and check out the images.

Re: Now this is just too much

Ahh yes Neill, a "night out" was not complete without a pie floater.

It was often after a good night at the pub with a few beers in you. It was an institution at a time in Adelaide when getting food late at night was not easy like it is today. Norwood Cowleys piecart was my regular. A mate and I consumed 3 1/2 floaters one night each!!! Wouldn't be able to do that now.

Cowleys pea recipe was a specialty to get the consistency just right. Not too chunky, not to pureed, the peas had to be cooked to perfection or the regulars would give the Cook heaps. A lot of friendly banter use to occur over the counter to the people on the other side eating.

Some people would have white vinegar on top and pepper instead of Tomato Sauce, never quite got into that one!!

I make pie floaters from scratch as an easy meal for the kids. They Love It.

In Sydney It was Harrys Caf? De Wheels located at Garden Island Dockyard at Woolloomooloo in Sydney.
Harry served a mean pie n peas and my favourite was a cup of tomato soup with my pie. So the standing order in the 70s was a "pie n pies and a cup of blood ". Ive goggle the current menu...no tomato soup

Harry reopened his pie cart after serving in WW11 and to get over the requirement to move his caravan every day he took the wheels off. As tyres were unobtainable after the war he kept that premier position well into the late 80s when a number of redevelopments seen the move to its present position at the end of the fleet wharf.
Harry died in the late seventies but Harrys Caf? De Wheels lives on in a number of new locations, his original van is now in the Power House Museum.
They still serve a mean pie n peas

Re: Now this is just too much

I can remember the pie cart open in the mid 50's at the GPO corner. Later in the 60's, Balfours opened one on North Tce outside the railway station, another opened on Norwood Parade, and yet another on North Tce under the Morphett st bridge. Now, all gone, regulations and insurance the killers of great traditional late night eateries with character and very reasonable pricing.
I used to love the Cowleys pies and my father would call into the caravan, get one for me, lift the bonnet of the Ford Falcon and put the pie on top of the starter motor just under the exhaust manifold. It was too hot to eat when he arrived and the bag was often well scortched but not burned.
                            Those were the days!!!

I read the " use to like Cowleys pies " and I did a google . Bugger! Closed down.
Where do you get a " floater" now?
I did turn up something of note about SA.... It's the only place on the planet where Coke is not the top selling drink ... Farmers union iced coffee is the top drop. I'm sure I've seen them in the fridge at my local store. Not a big drinker of coke or any other sugary drinks but I will definitly be giving it a go.

                                Hi Dave,
Cowleys was a specialty pie maker in the early 50's that had the market share particularly in Adelaide. They had a large shop with bakery on Cross Roads Glandore and reigned supreme for many years. Once sold, they went downhill untill only the pie cart remained that carried their name. Balfours, another large pie maker and baker jumped on the wagon with their van outside the Adelaide railway station but they (in my opinion) were not a patch on Cowleys quality and taste. Now Vissis has taken over but i am yet to try their floater as I and my wife love their products. Their bakery and cafe is in the middle of an industrial area of the city but open 24 hours and I have seen 4 deep at the counter with 11 people serving, an absolute gold mine for the owner Ville!
you can still buy the traditional floater here in Adelaide at a couple of cafes.
O?Connell St Bakery in North Adelaide, Cafe de Vilis at 2/14 Manchester St, Mile End, Enjoy Cafe Bakery at 112 The Parade, Norwood, The Green Porridge Caf?, the Kings Head Hotel, William St , the Buskers Floater, Barossa Steak House and at Prices Bakery (Port Road location but do have other cafe's around the state).Farmers Union Iced Coffee is a great product and considerably out sells Coke, I tend to buy the 2l bottles for generally under $5 and drink it in a day, often instead of lunch, very filling when icy cold, great value when on special.Only 2 days ago I bought 2 x 2l for $7 when a 600ml carton retails for $3.60.
