5.0 Earthquake

Wow, this one was a jolt! We have had some smaller rollers lately, but we just experienced a jolt that slammed the area. Woke me from bed, and had us looking for objects above bed areas. I am not scared of earthquakes, but this was a good one. I predicted this one earlier today to my wife. We have had increasing strengths during the week in quakes. Yesterday was 4.1 or so.

Hi Acoma,
we rarely get earthquakes here in Adelaide even thoufg I live only a kilometer from a fault line. Our last big one was in 1956 which shook me out of bed and did cinsiderable damage.
Your 5.0 quake is 10X stronger than a 4.0 quake so I can understand the increase in activity.
Hope that it didn't hurt the oven.

Didn't feel it down here Robert. I felt the 4.1 but I was in the office in Reno. Did the oven survive the hit?

These things scare me...very rare in the Midwest and I've never experienced one...thanks

but as a geologist, you know that the west is due for another big one....not if, but when, ....maybe where

tornadoes, hurricanes, sunami's, flash floods......part of life, but better on the sidelines

Basle had a big one around 1300, knocked down half the city aparently. And they say we're due for the next one sometime soon...

Though soon in geological terms could well be another 200 years.

I had no idea you were so close to Basel. I was there once for the clock and watch fair. The group I was exhibiting with had a dinner in France, which was at the end of a trolley line. From the map, Allschwil looks like it's about three blocks from the French border.

I was in Basel in 1993, exhibiting with a group of independent horologists who had a booth at the fair. This was the clock I was exhibiting:



It was not, how shall we say, a success. I was completely unprepared: I didn't know, for example, that the only language spoken in Basel was German. I had naively assumed that Switzerland was a tri-lingual country and my little bit of French could get me by. I didn't sell anything, and I was pretty miserable and isolated. I did, however, get to see quite a bit of Basel.

David - you do awesome work. It amazes me that you can be so precise in the movements of time keeping and still be a brother of the brick (and lets face it, it can be pretty sloppy and still work). Pretty cool!

Robert, my father in law, who is in town, awoke to the earthquake last night. I didn't fell a thing. We were talking about it this morning and I ran out to check my project - no harm. I trust you didn't have to do the campfire pizza

The oven worked perfectly. No damage from nature. I bet we get one more good one over the next week.

As for the clock, that is a very nice looking piece. It looks like it will withstand time...

Well dmun, if you come here again let me know and you won't be so isolated. Pity it didn't turn out well, usually you can get by with English and French around here - some of English speaking people who live and work here never learn to speak German. I worked at some of the trade fairs when I was a student, and they always tried to get multilingual people working there...
