Which option do you guys prefer? I am now 50/50 on which way. I am still wrapping up the cracks issue. After summer I will go one way or the other.

Re: Framed or igloo style
Acoma, when I started my build, I preferred igloo style better, switched to the framed style, and now that I am almost finished, switched back to the igloo style. I can't make up my mind. I may need one of each."Pizza, the world's most perfect food."

Re: Framed or igloo style
I've done both -- and I think it's fair to say that both styles are authentic, or typical, to the Mediterranean.
One thing I would think about is whether the rest of your outdoor areas are more linear or more curvy or organic. See if you can pick an oven style that ties other elements together.

Re: Framed or igloo style
I prefer the igloo as it has more character in my setting. I must admit that I do like James's framed but they add considerable size to the overall appearance.
Hey, the both work and work well!
Properly built and insulated, the igloo is more compact with very little if no loss of heat is the norm. Framed has the added capability of extra insulation but comes with extra cost and build materials/time/expense.
This is an individual decision and will always remain so because we all have individual ideas and aims.

Re: Framed or igloo style
I'm going with igloo Robert.
I have a small backyard and the footprint is big enough.
Now if I had a big back yard..... I'd enclose.
Let us know what you decide!

Re: Framed or igloo style
I'm going igloo but.....
Its an outer shell of red masonry brick (rather than firebrick) over the insulation and inner fire brick dome.
So it may look like a red brick oven, but its not really !! Also allows me to put plenty of insulation in.
Something like the one Jamie Oliver has, but without the wierd chimney thing !

Re: Framed or igloo style
I don't know, I kind of like the twisty chimney. I also like offsetting the chimney so it's in the center of the dome, although I know it's more work.
I would think about a hybrid shape, in the form of the traditional bottle kiln:

Re: Framed or igloo style
I started out doing an igloo simply because I didn't know how to frame, but my yard dictated that it wanted a stone wall look. I hired a framer to put up the studs and concrete board, and then stucco'd two sides and rocked two sides. Let the oven and surroundings tell you what it wants to be (afterall, it will be its own personality in the back yard). There is plenty of help available on FB once you decide.

Re: Framed or igloo style
I just knew my oven had to be an igloo... but it beats me if I know why though. Its not even necessarily that I like them better, there are so many cool ovens of either sort out there. But somehow anything but igloo was completely out of the question."Building a Brick oven is the most fun anyone can have by themselves." (Terry Pratchett... slightly amended)

Re: Framed or igloo style
Mine's going to be an igloo, but mostly because I think the larger framed up style will be out of place where I had to put the oven.
I can see a framed up one in my next home- and I think I will go ahead and buy a ready-made oven next time. I'm having a ball with this one so far, but after we build a new house (and I do mean we- we do a great many things ourselves) I think I'll need a break somewhere! I've gotten so many ideas from the photos others have posted I'm going to have trouble deciding which ideas to pirate!

Thanks everyone that voted. I found it intriguing to see how those of you voted. I believe it is great to see those that chose each. I will take a few photos of the area and backyard, then present idea on what I like. Your thoughts from there, argree or not, is appreciated.
