  • Granville Island Public Market

To me it is in B.C. We would go there each time while on our way to Whistler. The market is enormous and has numerous stands of fresh foods and flowers. Just about anything you want is delicious. George is close by and likely has been there.
An excellent pizza is shared with the ones you love!

I'm thinking you mean in downtown Vancouver Robert. I've been to that market - its a fun place and wonderful to walk though. Did you see the fish shops? They have live Dungeness crabs in booth after booth, stacked on top of each other in glass cases, the crabs staring out at you unable to move? I felt sorry for those animals. I love to eat 'em, but that must be torture to them.

Try European/Italian markets sometime in your life, sooner better than later. A really wonderful experience that would take pages to describe. Life as it used to be, at least to us. Wonderful!

I will do that. I am waiting a few years before taking the family to Europe, Mediterranean, etc.. I want them both to remember the experiences.

As for the crab, I just think butter, mmmm. When it comes to fish and crab, I don't feel sorry, I just feel hungry.

...That made me smile. We're waiting for ours to be a bit older before we take an extended family holiday to the US and/or Canada, for exactly the same reason.

Could this be an instance of the grass always being greener?

I guess one thinks of it as "regretting". We don't want to regret seeing other countries while it matters as a family. We can always RV the U.S. and Canada, that is, when they operate without gasoline (at 3.50 a gallon). So many beautiful places on this planet, why not see a little. Maybe it's like grains of sand, we want a handful of it.

You're right there... The world is such a big place. It seems a pity not to go and see some of it.

I must admit I love the perspective that travel to other lands gives me.

Places we only see once...and places we return to.

...yeah, and then we'd have a good excuse to do it again in a couple of years' time!

Just got back a few days ago from a mini one to Vancouver, where I went to ...
                  ... Granville Market!

I got some great cheeses - don't remember their names, but one was a semi-soft French one with a layer of ash, visible as a black line through the cheese, separating the 'morning milk' curds from those from the evening milking - and good! I also brought home a bag of red alderwood smoked salt which is supposed to taste great on roasted or BBQ'd meats. So far, it's worked out well on oven-baked salmon.

Below is a photo of one area of the food market and another from just across the water from where the market is situated (though it's out of the photo, more over to the left), showing a similar view that you'd see from the market. Great place!

Isn't the area memorable? Wow, everytime we head north, we stop there and see the area. Glad to got some photos. The marketplace is so much fun.

Sad there aren't more great markets on the West Coast, Huh? Try Pike Place in Seattle for a laugh. Merchants tossing salmon 20 feet across the store for wrapping and sausages and other delictables to make your eyes bulge. Very nice!

I enjoy that location too, but feel that the character of Granville offers more great varieties. Nothing against Pike Place, being that it is a regular stop as well when I would head to Seattle.

This thread has gone cold, but I figured I'd chime in. For a more authentic experience than Pike Place, check out one of the farmers markets around Seattle. Lots of good, fresh ingredients. 5 days a week (SOL on Mondays and Tuesdays).

Also, check out Pacific Foods International. Bulk caputo 00 flour and great, dried herbs.
