  • Arches

There are a lot of arches used in WFO's.

These shots are of a couple of masonry arches being built. Amazing how rough they are initially vs the final finish!

and another cool arch as well.

      Re: Arches

I think an islamic style oven would be way cool.

You could have the big dome in the center:

You could have moorish arches on each side, and you could even have a faux minaret in the back for mood lighting.

Absolutely not....they are structural...holding up a tile roof! The arch is incredibly strong and spreads the weight to the columns....the last pic is from the Alhambra...built by the Moors long before Columbus sailed in 1492!

Check this out....about 2000 years old and built without mortar! I've walked across it in the upper water trough and along the supporting arches (no raiilings )....still standing!

            Re: Arches

Quite a view from up there, though! I had a chance to visit the Pont du Garde about 15 years ago, and it was quite amazing. Definitely worth a trip if you're ever in that part of France!

I figure if that thing is still standing, my piddling little WFO ought to last at least a few years.

How about Gaudi's use of hanging keystones at Parc Guell....

                  his tilework ain't bad either
