  • Caveman Oven

    Okay, not old but interesting!

The oven was built into a carved opening, the garage next to it is carved into the mountain. There are probably 50 houses built into the rock in this hilltop town. These are original caves used by the Guanches, natives of the Canary Islands.

I noted there is no chimney on this oven or another I photographed in town. This one had a surprisingly high dome, rock walls about a foot thick and rock dome. It had been stuccoed outside and painted to match the painted mountain rock of his house.

He said the high dome was good for the bread he cooked.

Photos of other ovens, one being used and one larger one at a restaurant...

these two had more normal proportions.
