  • my summer project begins.

Well I an now of and running (hopefully) with the completion of my base. The sure had a fall of about 180mm. Hence why it is at such a jaunty angle. Used some cinder blocks, bricks and other aggregate to in fill somewhat and then poured the base using self reinforcing premixed bag cement.
Thank goodness for cement mixers, 20+ bags would not have been fun.

I am aiming to complete the task, after being challenged by my good lady, for $500 nzd or less. Thus far $185 spent on concrete, bought my bricks and refractory bricks for $1.50 on trade me, so on track to make budget. Oh just found a load of reinforcing grid and timber for nicks from a neighbour clearing out his garden for spring
Will keep watching your posts and I'll update add I move along the project.

Any pointers or ideas or things I ought to consider are gratefully received

    Cheers Andy

Good luck with the build. I'm also in the Waikato (Hamilton actually) and finished my oven earlier this year. Check out the photo in the gallery under drew audio.

$500 is going to be a challenge! Let me know how you get on!

      Kind regards
      Andrew

yes all good on that, the levels were set with a level with a slight fall of about 5mm to allow any rain to drain off,

Nice to hear from over the ditch

          Cheers Andy

            Sorry Al

I have just re read what you said - I mean that I made the slab level with a slight fall across it, the jaunty angle bit was with reference to the obvious height to the right edge in comparison to the left. The slab is nice and level and ready for the build, I'm actually quite happy with it given the ammount of brikkie-ing I've done!

            Cheers - Andy

                    Al,

Thats not a skate board ramp! What is the brick holding up?

Just supporting a timber that helps seal the concrete form. Due to the nature of the site, I also incorporated some bricks and aggregate to stabilize things. The brick is far from structural. Once the slab has set I intend to screed the side and pretty things up. Hope this makes sense

Thankfully, the are to the right is going to be a flight of stairs, hopefully this summer. Then I have a second lawn, which has a similar rake to the lawn where the oven is situated. BTW - I did not realise how much of a slope the lawn had until I laid the foundation slab and could see what level looks like by comparison. I was quite shocked!! And I originally thought it was the beer!! lol
