Re: 42" Brick Oven & Grill in Los Angeles.
Look up a video - but it's a 3/8" wide trowel. You hold the mortar next to the brick on a hod, and just push it in a bit at a time. It goes really quickly. Vertical joints are done with a pointing trowel first, then the horizontal joints are tucked, and then you tool.
My experience is that mortar bags make a mess. Brick mortar doesn't like to flow through them. You just get a bunch of compact sand at the opening and runny concrete all over your bricks.

Thanks for the advice, the mortar bag proved to be a mess and wasn't working that well, in the end we just applied it with a trowel, very similar to the video. Brickie... i agree the easier way would be to use full bricks and install as usual, however since i was using splits thinset needed to be used to secure the split bricks against the cinder blocks.

Here is some work from today. We continued the installation of the bricks. We cut open an area to accommodate for the BBQ pit clean out door, then continued to install the bricks.
Cutting the opening.
