Re: 42" build in Virginia
If the two joints on either side of a (straight) brick fail, and the rest of the arch remains bonded to the dome, the brick can fall. There's more than one post on this forum lamenting that fact.Last edited by vtsteve; 04-07-2013, 06:32 PM.

The biggest killer of arches is lack of buttressing due to the arch wanting to lay flat and pushing out the side walls.
They actually build flat arches and with proper buttressing they stay where they were built..

Re: 42" build in Virginia
Thanks!!!!
This is more harder than I ever thought it would be.
I removed more of the arch bricks and laid out an arch for the opening.
Not sure how to tie into the vent.
Help.............and then send more beer.
Do the joints at the inside of the arch touch, or are they 3/8" ?2 Photos

Re: 42" build in Virginia
OK, I hit it hard today. Just finished up. I was able to close off my dome using a exercise ball for support. A little trickie to say the least.
Who came up with the idea to stand on an exercise ball to lay your brick?
I hit the wall with only a small break, but wanted to tackle laying out my new arch like deeyooah suggested. I get some pics and hopefully get some advise.
thanks, fabby2 Photos

I think I would have to remove some of my dome to make room for a full size brick or my opening would only be 8.5" tall? Could I use a half brick with the same strength?
The angle gives it the strength, you could use basically any angle, except 90 degrees.
Actually thats not true about the 90 degrees as thats what I did in my oven entry and its still up.
Edit:-
Here are the next two courses done for you, I assume that you will taking it up as a chimney, or the start of a chimney.
Remote bricklaying........gotta love it.....1 PhotoLast edited by brickie in oz; 04-02-2013, 11:00 PM.
