When you say "chip" are you referring to the narrow cut bricks at the inner arch? If so, are you suggesting I start the solider course by cutting both the right and left sides of arch bricks first and make sure they're a full width brick?

Hodgey1, I believe that's what UtahBeehiver is saying.

Ideally you have full width bricks to start at each inner arch base, then work back from there. This will minimize the amount of small chips & mortar work that you will have to do where the dome meets the inner arch base.If necessary you can cut 1 brick to fit the last gap to ensure a tight fit to complete the soldier chain.

Hod,

You don't need a whole brick but the smaller chips are more prone to cracking or working loose. The tie-in on right side could of been one piece instead of two. The one of the left looks fine. However, if you are going to make adjustments to bricks, the front 1/3 of the dome is the place to do it. No one ever sees the adjustments there after you start firing the oven so do you best work on the back 2/3s of the dome.

I agree, if you look at my build pics, that's why I choose to hide the small bricks in that area.
I knew you wouldn't ever see them.

Coming along nicely. Just an observation, keep an eye out vertical joints lining up from one course to another.

Nice tight joints Chris.
Are you cutting mitre & bevel angles on each brick.
It's difficult to tell w/ the first few chains, since the angle & bevel are so shallow.

Russell, should I cut the brick to avoid the ocasional verticle joint?

Todd, I opted to use the square bricks due to what seemed at the time along with all the other hurdles I faced to be too much of a challenge. I am now seeing that it would have been very doable had I just put my mind to it. Things are going pretty good and not as daunting as I assumed. I think I'll do the tapered bricks on my next build :-)

Cutting a brick to help you maintain bond works just dont make too small aka a "chip" you can make adj in the front 1/3 of dome and it will never be seen.

Oh, that is a large old wash tub upside down to act as a peak to shed water off while it's tarped.
