    New 42" build in Alberta

    Hi folks,
    I started my oven build at the beginning of April 2015, and have now been cooking in it for just over a month. Planning to share all the pix, but trying with one or two at first to make sure I understand the process.

    Early on, testing the first chain of dome bricks above the soldiers. The IT is just sitting there ... I hadn't yet decided the best way to anchor it. Two months later: almost ready to cure. That chimney sure looks huge! Tent will stay in place until I get some more permanent protection over the dome.

    Here is site preparation and installing the stand. How nice to know a welder!
    The raw materials, bought from FB. I needed more bricks thatn this, and found I could source them nearby. Rented a gas-powered auger, to create four holes, each 12" in diameter. Footings are a 10" pipe 36" deep.

      These pix cover the floor inner arch, and beginning of the dome.
      Making friends with the tile saw. It's now for sale: used for only one job! A big investment, but I can't see how I could have managed without it. Cutting the FB floor tiles. Sub-floor in place. I decided to use firebrick splits under the large floor tiles, for greater mass. These splits were laid on top of the FB ceramic insulation board, and smoothed with the cup grinder before placing the large tiles. I used firebrick clay from the saw to set the floor tiles.

        Details of my version of the Indispensable Tool. Thanks to everyone who went before me! The pivot is made from a floor caster mechanism.

          Further dome-building, and a crisis solved.
          A reassuring moment. First real problem: there is nothing to support this chain of bricks where it meets the inner arch. Only solution I could think of was to build a second inner arch. This shows the form which will support it.

            Support techniques for finishing the dome. Flue construction.
            Once I got to the last few chains, the slope was too steep for the mortar to set in a reasonable length of time, using the IT. So... ... I built an interior platform and mounded sand over it to complete the last few rows of dome bricks. Only a few left! Disadvantage of the sand was that I couldn't check the fit on the interior. Result was some extra mortar inside which I would otherwise have cleaned off.

              Oven completed, and first fire.
              Oven complete, with chimney in place. Sure makes the oven look tiny! I've since stuccoed the dome, and will eventually build a protective 'hut' over the whole thing. I was relieved that it draws very well. No smoke out the entrance! I spent about a week building ever-larger fires for curing.

                Great job! I love the picture with the smoke coming out of the chimney and the trees in the background.
