    Asudavew,

Thanks - it looks different in person.

FYI - I put a halogen lamp in the oven to check for cracks. I've built up a lot of soot burning paper...

Anyway I didn't notice any cracked bricks. If anything I have some hairline cracks in the mortar joints. I guess I'll be able to tell once I take off the FB blanket.

    Thanks
    Dick

I love how you placed the front bricks straight.. then herringbone behind.
Now why didn't I think of that................

      • The Badger Build (Finished the Outside Arch)

        Gang,

I took the day off to run a few errands (license renewal, take back some decorative bricks that were the wrong color) and work on the wfo.

Finished the front arch. I used a styrofoam form, made sure my bricks were set right and just started shoving mortar in. I waited an hour or two and took out the form.

Overall I'm pretty happy. I'll need to clean up the bricks a little so their brown color comes out.

4 total curing sessions 300-450 (total time of 11 hours). I want to do 1-2 more before I insulate.

Hoping to put the other blanket on this weekend and start the perlcrete!

        Thanks
        Dick

Thanks. I took back some today that had a little too much red to them... I think I get the muratic acid to get some of the haze off.

I actually bought my chimney sections at Lowes. I had them special order the cap and the mounting plate.

              Hoping to install this weekend.

              2 questions.

              1) Should the chicken wire be tight over the blanket or lose to help hold the perlcrete.

              2) Having trouble finding Stucco at Lowes/HD. What options do I have?

              Thanks

Looks great!! You've made some beautiful arches.

You've mentioned a cantilever before. How will that attach now? Looks like the decorative arch comes all the way to the front.

                  Mfiore,

I'll just build out about 6-8 inches... Given it will be a solid pour all the way around the oven and since I'm using rebar I should be okay... (i hope).

Not sure of the official way, but form them up and just push in the mortar vs trying to mortar/place each brick seemed to work out...

Badger, I put chicken wire lose. Not sure if it is the correct method, but it worked for me. I just had to push the perlcrete through the holes.

Lovely archway! What are you planning for the outside of the oven?

                        Frances,

                        Thanks!

Going with an igloo style. Hoping to put 2" of blanket and 3-4" of perlcrete this weekend.

Having trouble finding stucco... HD/Lowes don't carry it... They do carry a bunch of other products - what is similar that I can use???

Definitly want it to be waterproof! I was also planning on painting the dome as well.

                        Thanks

I've got a stucco house (in wisconsin no less!) Anyway, when a small section fell off above a second story window (lack of lathe). I picked up some reinforced concrete from HD. It's white with bits of fiberglass in it so it can be applied to vertical surfaces. You have to look very close to see difference between it an my stucco.

It same stuff that CVDUKES has used to cast his outdoor fireplace o thread:

                          http://www.fornobravo.com/forum/36/s...ct-3464-4.html

He calls it fiberglass reinforced cement.

Come to think of it, mine's covered with reinforced concrete... I think cplain is right, check out the fiberglass concrete products available. And on top of that I put a layer of acrylic house paint - seems water tight enough.

I gather the difference between that kind of product and stucco is mainly in the name anyway. Or in the words of The Bard... "What's in a name? Stucco by any other name would hold off the rain just as well..."

There's also paint specifically designed for stucco. In north part of states they recommend using an elastomeric paint. It's heavy duty latex paint that is designed to bridge cracks and actually flex. Here's one qucik article on it:

Possibly the best exterior finish is elastomeric paint.

Thanks - I'll check it out. I definitely want all the protection I can get...

                                Gang,

Got a lot done but didn't take "all weekend" given it was fathers day
                                • Chimney installed
                                • 2 inches of blanket and chicken wire
                                • 1/2 of the dome in perlcrete

I know I need everything to dry before I stucco, but when can I start building fires again?

                                Thanks
