Re: Todd's Oven
I'm strongly in favor of using an inch or two of mortar on the outside of a mortarless dome. I'm a little worried about bumping the bricks with tools during cooking; although gravity will probably keep them securely in place.
I hadn't thought about thermal expansion causing them to shift. One more reason to put a layer of mortar on the outside. The mortar will crack, but no big deal. It will be tightly wrapped with blankets and vermic.

I think we agree, go for it.Originally posted by toddj View PostI come here for knowledge and support and you turn the newbe into the guinea pig
Do you guy's think it's possible for the bricks to "walk out" due to the thermal expansion on the bottom courses? If that were the case, it makes a good argument for putting mortar on the outside. I know the upper course bricks won't go anywhere, they are locked.

Re: Todd's Oven
mortarless means no stress from hot to cold if properly fitted. if you have the patience for the cuts then do it. you wont be sorry. you are doing great so far.

Todd
Looks great how are you cutting your brick, I measured my wet tile saw last night and found out it will only cut 2 1/4" my brick is 2 1/2" looking for advise.

You will be the first - let us know.Originally posted by toddj View Postso seriously, no mortar between the bricks? Will that actually work?
I only used mortar on the back to maintain the angle - If you are cutting that angle, I see no reason to use mortar. You will probably need some for the entry / arch transition, it get's pretty ugly in that spot.

Re: Todd's Oven
Well I have 200lb of heat stop, but it has been raining every day so I have just been dry-stacking so I can keep cutting bricks. I plan to keep cutting to fit all the way up and I am numbering each brick. Is there any advantage of just coating the outside vs. mortaring everything together ??

Re: Todd's Oven
I was a little early on the reply - your last post made it very clear how you achieved the reveal. I wouldn't bother with a break on the floor. There is plenty of gap between the brick to accommodate the expansion. You mentioned heat stop - aren't you going to dry stack all the way up? Looks like you got it going.

Re: Todd's Oven
Thanks Les!
I did the reveal like this because I plan to do a thermal break between the first arch and the outer arch and chimney, I had even thought about cutting a thermal break in the oven floor at the inner arch.. What do you think??

missing a few filler bricks...

Todd - looking clean! How did you do the reveal? - I ripped my bricks but it looks like you took another approach.
