Re: Todd's Oven
I was getting a little worried myself. I had sent Todd a private message about some heat stop and have not heard back from him. I hope he just took a nice vacation.

Re: Todd's Oven
I would tend to leave them in for a day or two at least. Longer if they are supporting more weight than the arch itself (or will support more in the next day or two).
Cement does not reach a reasonable strength for a couple days and then does not reach full strength for something closer to 20 days after that....

Re: Todd's Oven
What is ideal? This seems to be of controversy. Some threads are saying to pull the forms right away, to see if the arch is self supporting, not needing mortar to hold it in place. Other threads argue to keep the forms in until mortar cures well.Originally posted by christo View Postthe number one reason for arch problems is removing the forms too early.

My vote is for leaving the forms in. Mainly because I'll not be confident enough in my own masonry work to trust it.

Re: Todd's Oven
I would bet if we made a poll, the number one reason for arch problems is removing the forms too early. It's just so darn tempting.
Now you just need a fancy cast iron door!!

Thanks Ken!
Well here are a few more photos of the arch in place..
Im not 100% happy with it because I rushed it and pulled the support a little too early and it is not exactly square.

Re: Todd's Oven
Dude, your mortarless dome is going up faster and prettier than most of our rough-cut domes!
Love the arch. I'm in awe!

Re: Todd's Oven
ok looks like you have given me the idea i needed to see. mortarless is what i want to do. seeing your work so far, this is going to be obtainable on my end. the mods to the brick saw are doable. but if need be i already have a plan in mind to make a one handed brick breaker. with a breaker and a stationary grinder i can do it. now just to get back from texas and it will happen.
