Got the forms for the insulating layer done today, whats the verdict on rebar in the insulating layer, seems like some use it but others have not. Also I know the 5:1 ratio but how much vermiculite have folks been using for a 5X5X5in layer. Seems like I will only need 2 bags of portland cement and and couple of big bags of vermic
Rebar is a waste in the insulating slab as it contributes nothing to compressive strength, and that is the only factor (other than insulation) that counts.
Agree with Tscarborough, that rebar does nothing in the insulating layer. The insulating layer carries a compressive load primarily, and not a tensile load, which is what rebar is used for. In fact, the high heat conductivity of rebar might reduce the effectiveness of the IL, and the difference in expansion might even crack it during heat up.
it was in the 90s today so I only played around with the floor bricks. i ended up doing a 5.5 inch vermicrete layer, probably overkill but I guess it can't hurt
I've been thinking we should call the reveal into the oven chamber a door jamb -- which is a more accurate term. Your oven door closes flush against the door jamb and cuts off air, the same way a door and door jamb tightly closes a room.
