I'd like to build a brick fireplace in my backyard, not an oven. The calore2g seems like a good choice. It seems that you can build whatever facade you like for it, i.e. brick, stucco, etc. What I'm confused about is the inside of the f/p. Are firebricks used inside, and if so, how far up into the chimney?

Yes you veneer the inside of the fire box with fire brick splits. There is kind of a logical spot to stop the splits inside the throat of the fire box. it's kind of hard to describe but it will make sense as you assemble the kit.

You could probably pour your own footing and then hire a mason to build you the fireplace guts and structure for about the same amount of money as buying this kit and it would be a better fireplace.
