Reading, thinking, and talking about building a wood-fired oven for quite a while now but this summer it looks like it will finally happen. The construction will be a family project at our cottage north of Toronto, Canada.

On top of the usual challenges of sourcing materials in Canada and building a frost-resistant foundation to weather our winters we're building on an island so all materials have to be brought in by boat (and hand loaded and unloaded onto said boat). If that weren't enough we're only working with an inch or so of topsoil before we hit two layers of limestone for eighteen inches or so until bedrock.

    Can't wait to get started!

Sounds like quite a location, and quite a project! Are you going to use a floating slab, or are you planning to go down to that bedrock?

      Re: First Post

      Thanks for the welcome, Daren.

Our plan was to add four corner piers (about 6" wide by 12" long by the 18" deep to bedrock) to the usual foundation. This seems to be what works for buildings on the island. After seeing what sarah_h did with her oven in Ottawa the easier floating slab looks quite tempting.

Open to any suggestions/input. Is this the best board with the forum for this discussion
