  • New guy from west jordan utah with first question.

I have been wanting to build my oven for a couple of years now. I am learning a lot from the down loadable plans, and have this one initial, but sure to have many more, questions.

First.... How close is too close to build to my house? I.e are there guidelines on where to build?

I am planning on building it on my backyard concrete slab about 16 feet from my house. Sixteen feet would be where the center of the oven is.

Hey there! You have many good resources being in utah. Russell aka... UtahBeehiver is the best. I live close by in South Jordan. You should check with the City to confirm if there are any regulations as to how close to your house but 16 ft away from your house is plenty. Russell's oven is only like 10' away. Just make sure you are far enough away from your property line as there may be a 3' setback. But with insulation and everything you could build it right next to your house. Join the SLOB Salt Lake Oven Builders group (link below) here on the site. I would love to get a group together to have a meet sometime but we'll see how that goes. Let me know if I can answer any other questions or if you want to throw your plans by me.

I live in west valley so I am close as well. I have permission from my wife, but we have a small lot. I am trying to figure out the rules for property lines as well. I also have an HOA I must deal with. I would love to join a group. I likely will not build my hearth until the spring.

Re: New guy from west jordan utah with first question.

It is good to see several people from Utah building ovens. I am also in Utah, West Valley actually. I am trying to find the rules of where I can put my oven in relation to my property lines. I was granted clearance from my wife to build the oven, but have not determined what would be allowed from the city, and the HOA. I have a small lot, so I would like to put it as close to the property line as possible to maximize space. I will probably not start until the snow melts in 2015, so I am in my planning phase.

An oven group here sounds great, I will head over to the link provided and try and join.

          Hey Roland,

Russell here, glad to see another Utah build. I am here to help anyway I can. Post or PM either way but I suggest a post then others can chime in. My opinion is only one of many and there is a lot of good experience out on the forum from all over the world. If you have not see it yet, here is a link to "some" of the better documented builds. The FB plans are a great baseline but it is dated and many new innovations have evolved since its publication. Peruse the Forum for the latest and greatest ideas.

            Welcome Roland!

before you start, make sure you know that your existing backyard concrete is thick enough to handle the weight of the oven. Backyard concrete pads are usually designed for the weight of people. I had to reinforce my existing backyard concrete before I started. Good luck! You are in the right place!

Re: New guy from west jordan utah with first question.

I poured my pad ten years ago over pea gravel and used a six bag mix pumped in from a grout pump. The concrete is at least four inches thick and at most six. No rebar. It has had a hotub on another part for a year now with no movement. But still who knows how strong it really is. Needless to say it would be strong enough for a car to drive on it.

I am sixteen feet from the property line and sixteen from the house. When i built my shed the city said to be six or eight feet,i cant remember exactly, from the house and six from an ajoining property line. That was per fire code. I ended up building it three from the property line, but i dont care because the closest house is at least thirty feet away from that.

As for the oven I am more concerned about the smoke involved during cooking and how far from a house is good enough to keep it from seeping into the house, or being good for fire code.

              Just my thoughts.

              Keep the replies coming.

I am planning on getting med duty fire bricks from the brick yard out here in west jordan. They quoted me around 1.60 per brick. They also tried to discourage me from building my oven and just buying one of their firerock brand ovens. 1800$ no thanks! Plus i dont think their oven materials are the right mix for an oven. They use the same stuff to build their fireplaces. So I thought it would be more of an insulator, and not a retaining material for heat. Who knows.

                    Use "Go Advance"
Then "Manage Attachments" - Normally about 4 pics is max. depending on pixel size.

Sound like you went to Interstate Brick. $1.60 decent price.

Here is a list of local places I got my materials

                    1. Fire clay - Interstate Brick - abt $10 per bag used abt 1.5 bags
                    2. Quartz sand - Sutherlands - used abt 2 bags for homebrew.
                    3. Ca Si and FoamGlas - EJ Bartells - Thermo Gold 12 (Ca Si)
                    4. Ceramic Fiber Blanket - NPS - but this is hit and miss place to find, EJ Bartells carry CF blankets.

The rest of the stuff is big box store stuff.

You can buy Roxul from homedepot as your insulating fire blanket outside the oven and on KSL you can usually find insulating firebrick from someone along the wasatch front. The Insulating firebrick is an excellent insulater for underneath your oven.

To your question about smoke, you are definitely far enough away from your house for nothing to seep in. As long as you have enough draw from your flue then you shouldn't have much smoke that seeps out as the oven fires up. Once the oven is up to temp it shouldn't smoke much at all.

Depending on the oven size will tell if your pad is strong enough to hold the oven. A friend of mine recently poured his pad and he has a very large oven. his pad where the oven is 1' deep of reinforced concrete. You could land an airplane on it if it were long enough but a crack has begun to form from the 1' section to the part that attaches to his house. His oven started at about 4000 lbs and is now probably closer to 10000 after adding a small island for serving etc. Mine is very oversized but is easily 20,000+ and is also rebar enforced. I've had no problems with mine except that it is in the wrong spot

Building your own is always the best option in my opinion. Funny that interstate brick tried to get you to buy theirs though. I'm excited to see how your build progresses.

Welcome Cookingdude! Its good to see that more people in Utah are interested in WFO's. I would definitely suggest starting your own thread in the pompeii oven construction section so we can discuss your build there. The rules for your HOA may be hard to get around since many HOA decisions have to be discussed by the board and approved (could take weeks). This can be very difficult if not in many cases impossible so I wish you the best of luck on that front. If you do get them approved then check with the city to confirm setbacks. I can tell you that the setbacks in South Jordan say that if a structure is 1. of geometric shape 2. larger than 30 sq/ft 3. Taller than 2 ft then you must be at least 3' away from the property line. My plans are very oversized though and it would be easy to simply make an oven pad that is less than 30 sq/ft so that you could be almost right on the property line.

looks like a good spot... have you had security issues in your area... that is quite a legit security camera on the corner of your house
