  • Replacing my Barrel Vault oven

    HI Guys
After many years of use our Barrel vault style oven finally failed (mainly due to some short comings in design on my behalf, )and the fact that it stood in the weather unprotected. I am now going to build a Pompeii oven in its place using the original hearth as the base. One big question I have is has anyone used standard compressed FC sheet under the oven floor? My original oven had standard pavers laid straight on the 150mm thick concrete but we think that this may have led to losing a fair amount of heat through the floor. We were thinking that 2 layers of 15mm FC sheet may have been an option under the fire brick floor in the new oven. We have the the sheet on hand and living in a remote area this could save some time and costs. Other wise I am open to any and all suggestions / comments

    Cheers

I'm not clear as to what the FC sheet is so I cannot comment, but I think you'll get more attention in the build area.

No expert here, but assuming the FC Sheet (Fiber concrete) is similar to Hardi-backer. As far as I am aware, this board does not offer much in terms of insulating properties. It is mostly designed as a structural backer.

You really need some sort of high-temp insulation layer between your oven floor of firebrick and the structural slab (I used 2" (50 mm) of alumina silicate board). Otherwise, all of that heat gets transmitted into your concrete and dissipated throughout.
