  • Hi from Cardiff, Wales

    Hi there,

I came across this forum and registered as looking for additional information, support and ideas to assist when I get to the building of the oven floor and dome.

I would welcome members feedback on the following:

Oven Floor and under floor insulation:
From the base of my plinth to the where I would lay my oven floor, I have 20cm to fill (1.25sq.metres).
Should I use mixture of sand and bottles, followed by a layer of Storage Heater Bricks and then my firebrick oven floor or should I add a layer of fireclay mortar and use the storage heater bricks as my oven floor?

    Dome Structure:
Using Fireclay mortar mixes, I am aiming to do the following layers:
Layer 1 - Fireclay mortar mix over the sand mound
Layer 2 - Fireclay mortar mixed with sawdust
Layer 3 - Fireclay mortar with my perlite
Each layer would be 7cm in width.

Are these ideal builds for both the oven florr and the dome?

    Materials currently available to use:
    1. Plenty of builders sand.
    2. 150 kg of fireclay (1400c)
    3. 30 Storage Heater Bricks
    4. 80 Fireclay Bricks (1200c)
    5. 75 kg of Castable Mortar (1400c)

I need to get portland cement and lime.

Your advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Carl
