  • Greetings from Kentucky

My name is Jon. I am working on building an oven and have found myself here searching for info. Attached is a pic or 2 of what I have so far.

Jon, do you have any insulation under your floor bricks? It does not look like you do.

Under the floor bricks there is a 7" thick hearth pad that has a pad at the bottom made of vermiculite/concrete

Ah, you are following the Alan Scot type design? I think there are a few folks on this site that have built barrel ovens, so hopefully they can help guide you. I know the older designs recommended putting insulation under the hearth slab but that gives quite a big thermal mass to heat so most now recommend putting it under your hearth bricks. It looks like you are pretty far along in your build though, so hopefully access to lots of wood isn't going to be a factor for you.

I bought a set of "plans" from Rado Hand. Mine is just a little larger. I'm not too concerned with wood consumption. I heat my home with wood. I live in a forest, oak and hickory is plentiful. I have a chainsaw and log splitter. No worries for wood.
