  • Oldie but a newbie…

    Hey all!
First post here. By way of introduction, I am, as they say, of an age (75) and will be starting on a pizza oven build. I have a bit of experience with a lot of different materials and techniques (just finished a year-long bathroom/steam shower remodel during which I had to rebuild my Lynx grill). My outdoor kitchen has concrete countertops that I poured and polished. During the grill rebuild I replaced the lid that is 2 layer stainless steel and have visions of using the old one to craft a door for the oven. Don’t really weld so will probably farm that out.
So my vision is a round oven, 36” or 42” built on my fire pit as a base and the existing natural gas for the heat source. I’m in an HOA and can’t use wood. Also in my vision is to taper the bricks fully or partially on all sides. I have seen at least one oven like that in my crawling the web but can’t seem to find it again. My next problem and I’m sure the last one I’ll have is a source for firebrick. I’m in the Phoenix AZ area and so far have not come up with much but $6 per brick onesy twosies. Anybody have any ideas?
I’m currently away from home but will begin posting pics of the fire pit etc when I return. I expect this to be a long build and hesitate to put a time on it, but hope to have it mostly done before next May when the temps get too hot to do much work.
Enjoy reading the posts and am learning a lot already! Thanks for the forum. I hope to add as much as I get along the way.

Hi Waywon, Welcome to the forum.

Here is a search of the forum with the key word "Arizona". It should bring up several builds from your state. I did a quick glance and saw some questions and replies about sourcing firebrick. 6 bucks per brick sounds like, what I call "fireplace store" prices. Most of them in my area cater to home DIYers. They usually price their material much more expensive than the local brick yards and building supply stores. You will want to source your firebrick from where contractors and bricklayers source theirs.

I'm looking forward to following your oven's build thread.
