Re: Oven Build 900mm - NZ

My wife informed me yesterday that the initial price i told her was yeh I think it will cost....., then next time I think it will cost about ...... now it's well we should add this insulation and this needs to be done other wise it wont hold the heat as well. The total build cost is a not a constant when it is your first build... so many things to learn and where to get good cheep supplies... anyway I am yet to decide on the flute part/ vent. I may try and cast a vent like in the plans and then get a stainless flute with top. There is a place in Auckland called certec that has them but not sure what type. Will keep you posted on that. It may be cheeper to get a local fabricator to whip one up. Cheers Kris

    Hi
Also building here in NZ -Chch
Been reading alot and moving forwards slowly. Now upto the 2 course of brick of dome and trying to resolve the issue of the inner arch and tying.
Can agree that the costs here are significant. Fortunately i got the project well started before my wfe sw the scale of the total costs.

Have you decided on your flue size and the best place to buy?

    Hey Kris,
Yes the shed mag is crap at best. I've only bought a few copies over the years and have been most disapointed by it generally.

I picked up my fire clay from a brick factory down here in chch that make firebricks also.
I'm not sure what so good about it vs normal clay?.
Mine looked like soil but as soon as you work with it is definately clay.

yeah my perlite is pretty brittle too i did 1:5 for the base insulation, I'm still a little worried about it's strength try not to neil on it or anything the wieght will break it up.

I think kiwipyro is up your way (huntly?) who may be able to advise on local suppliers.
    All the Best.
    Regards
    Bart

    greetings guys

I have just started a build here in Rotorua. I started with a plan from the shed magazine and then by luck I lost it, just after I had the structural slab poured. so I had to do some further research and found this site. Glad that I did.
I have just poured my first insulation layer for the base and are going to lay some fire bricks on it tomorrow. I have decided to go for a clay brick for the dome due to the crazy prices of fire bricks. How did your perlite and cement mix work out. Mine is really brittle. well hope that your builds are going well.

    Cheers

    Kris

Floor complete. Placed the bricks on a 50/50 fireclay sand mix.
I'm finishing the form today. once bricked around i hope to burn it out.
    Cheers

Finially between the earthquake, weather, family and work. The build continues.
Tomorow i should have all the base fire bricks in and the dome support structure finished. I will curve some 3mm mdf over the area for the doorway and staple it in place.

    Comments??

you can tell if they are insulating by the weight.if they are light and smash easy with a hammer and the insides are like honeycomb, with lots of air pockets they are insulating but i think your fine.

    Hey Swampy,
Yeah it looks like they make all the castable in NZ and yes they are a pack of bastards for not selling direct. still at least you can make a start now. I'm just starting on a test to see if these bricks are any good, will really loose my rag if these are insulating...

they should be fine.if they are used to line their kilns they should be the go.
i just got some refractory concrete from troweltrade who got it from crow refractory.i got it home and its got shinagawa stamped all over it.wish i could go straight through them since they are just down the road.

Scored some bricks hopefully they will do the job.

I Managed to pick up these bricks today about 350-400 for $200NZD normally $4.5+gst each. they are made by a local brick manufacturer and used to line their kilns. they are made from "high" Al2O3 content Clay mixed with aggregates. they are 230x110x75mm @3.6Kgs so work out at about 2000-2100Kg/m2 which seems okayish however I'm still a little concerned about their specific heat capacity. I hope to test these as soon as possible any one done this before?

    Hey Swampy,
Sounds good, keep us in the loop...
Unfortunately only master trade stock it here in Christchurch at $65+gst.
But i think your right and about 10 bags will do the job.
What are your dimensions going to be?

Any how after Fridays earth quake i need to fix the house first
