  • Advice on door design

I was kicking around some ideas with my dad tonight about how to make an insulated door. I want to make the outside out of wood, and was thinking of using vermiculite board for the inside lining. Has anyone tried this before?

    Hi Erni,
many variations of door design are on this forum, the on I did is listed which works well. I have cast aluminium swing doors that seal against fibreglass ropes but are uninsulated at present. I plan eventually to use either a board or the let over superwool that I used in the pictures. See:

      Neill,
There is a cloud over the safety of the insulating blanket, depending on what fibres it contains. While the blanket is sealed between the inside and outside domes if it is sitting behind the mesh of yor door, won't some of the fibres be free to escape? The Europeans have given it a "class 2 carcinogen" and they use a safer but more expensive product. I believe it is a problem to inhale rather than ingest.

        Hi Ernie,

Here is the link to the thread for the door I built for the WFO. I used a sheet metal and copper to wrap a wood frame, filled with loose perlite. The door functions well, but now with a bit of history, some of the wood bits in the structure of the door are showing some signs of wear (the bottom wood is slowly burning away, the perlite leaks out a bit).

Just a bit of background information for you to consider in your door design.

Very nice, thanks. So much to consider. I actually just made an all plywood temporary door just to keep a bit of heat in overnight until I decide on my insulated door design
