  • CHIMNEY/FLUE position ???

    Wow, now I'm really confused.
Does the chimney/flue go BEFORE or AFTER the door?
I've seen photos of it INSIDE the chamber and OUTSIDE the chamber.

    Before.

The door should be able to completely close off the inside of the oven.

      Okay, that makes sense.
What if the chimney had a damper in it that can close it off?

Mine has the flue inside the oven and a damper in the flue and it all works fine.

Hmm, Interesting... Thanx for the input.
I am currently at the stage of completed floor and walls on my barrel-type oven. Was wondering where to go next.

"What if the chimney had a damper in it that can close it off?"

That would achieve the same thing, but it is another level of complexity.

Yeah, that COMPLEXITY thing keeps showing up...
I've managed to rework the front-end design so that the chimney is on top of the tunnel.
Its adding a little bulk to the front end, but the mock-up I've just made looks great.

There are quite a few pics in the link in my sig. The inner arch is offset to one side so that there is room to have a fire burning and still access the pizzas.

Here is my oven with damper slot, its nothing more than a cut down brick.
The damper is a piece of kiln shelving it can be seen on the right shoulder of the oven.

Flue outside of the door concentrates the heat inside.

In order to be assured of the right amount of heat retained in the oven, the oven door height needs to be 63% of the oven dome height (in your case, the barrel height). Understand this point before you proceed further!!

These pictures show where to put the vent. I copied these pictures from a thread on this site....I admit I stole it without keeping track of the original author, for that I apologize....But, for educational purposes, its OK

Here's a neat little solution for a chimney/flue position. Saw quite a few of these on our travels through France and Italy. This one is in Chinon castle France.
