  • Hi!

We started this wfo adventure earlier this year, but didn't get very far before the awful heat of this summer arrived. We managed to get our foundation up, but had to wait to pour concrete and the insulating slab for fear of cracking from drying too fast.

Well, so far so go. We used today ( day after Thanksgiving ) as the day to start cutting brick and laying out our dome plan.

We are using reclaimed firebricks, which create an issue on fitting nice and smooth. We are grinding and smoothing things as best we can, I don't think it will be an issue in the end.

Having an issue trying to post pictures to this thread, so I may just put them in an album on my profile.

    Thanks for all the inspiration!

    Hello Lt

We worked through the heat of the summer....It was very hot with quite a bit of dry wind to boot. But, we got it done.

We cut our recycled firebricks and placed the halves so the cut side faces inward. No problems yet. Try to keep your planning ahead of your construction....It will save you correcting mistakes.

If you are thinking about building a brick oven, my advice is Here.

I try to learn from my mistakes, and from yours when you give me a heads up.

      Re: Hi!

      Welcome lt,

When building my dome I think working in +105F southern california heat took more out of me than the moisture it sucked out of my mortar. You're definitely in a position to enjoy your build now that the wether has cooled.

If you're not able to reduce your pics' image size easily (prior to attaching them), there are a number of threads here that show how to do this. I use MS Paint, which comes free with your Windows OS and is super-easy.

Remember, as you plan your oven to include over-insulating it. You will be glad you did.

      John

What is Godseed? Is that what Mary was given?
Have a great Christmas all. We're having a family Christmas in Japan.Ahh, powder snow! This time of year is unbearably hot here in Townsville.

14 days, two cities, now thats they way to travel. The Japanese way would be 14 days 28 cities, a photograph at every landmark site and back on the bus. At the onsen, be sure to spend a day strolling around in your yukata and geta's. Have fun.
