  • How much $$$ do you have in your oven

Ballpark figure, what did your ovens cost to make?
I have room for a 40" or so and like the round Pompeii style.
I have roughly figured the firebrick, mortar and base. But i know there are many other items i am not realizing.

Also can a tile saw cut firebrick? Or do i need a brick saw?

    Thanks!

Tilesaw can cut firebrick just fine as long as you have a big enough throat. It can make a lot of nasty dust and noise. I used a hydraulic brick splitter I found on craigslist for $50...it worked just fine and no dust or noise! I am thinking that my entire build probably cost me about $2500-$3000. This included permit, tool rentals, foundation concrete, re-bar/wire mesh, metal framing studs, cement backer board (if you choose to build it the way I did), thermal insulation (blanket and board), metal framing studs, chimney liner and cap, and I dressed my entire oven in stone veneer...which was pricey, but worth it, roofing shingles.

I have a 42 inch, and use every inch of it....so much fun!

      Thanks Jeep!
I was guessing $2500 or so. I just know from other projects that things come up you were not accounting for. Pretty soon a $1000 job is actually $1500 or more. Been there. Thanks for the reply!

Re: How much $$$ do you have in your oven

            Approximation at best...

            400 firebricks at 1.18 each....$475

            Rebar.................................$100

            Block..................................$125

            Portland, sand, lime, clay........$120

            Insulation.............................$450

            stucco materials....................$300

            hired labor for
            three days help with stucco.....$450

            double walled chimney
            assembly, cap, and base...........$200

            Thermocouples embeded in oven $120

            Approximate total...$2340

Call it $2500 to account for buying a few tools, and assorted crap.

That's for a barrel vault measuring 36 inches wide by 42 inches deep. Still need to do the countertop. I'll probablly use pavers since I already have them and mortar.

Re: How much $$$ do you have in your oven

Probably a bit under $3000 by the time I scratched and scrounged a few things...the last one I built for someone else, probably $5000 - $5500 by the time everything was accounted for!

I stopped counting at $15000 for our project...But I had a lot of contractor help.

I'd have been happy with a premade oven on casters from fornobravo at one fifth the cost.

I thought i was saving money doing it myself instead of an FB unit. To give our host, James some kudos, i am not so sure. I wouldn't trade my oven, but i could have digested a lot of pizza by now instead of brick dust. For me, the oven has been the cheap part, i think. It is like buying a horse. The horse is usually the cheapest part. It is the new pickup, new trailer, new fence, new duds, bigger hat and the cattle to go with him that kills you. All the stuff around the oven is what really adds up. Especially in a kitchen setting. But just the oven cost:
Bricks and mortar plus shipping: $1,600
                        fb board and blanket:$477.00
                        base concrete and cmus: $250.00
                        Chimney "Chimzilla" pipe: $900
                        enclosure:$350
                        vermiculite:$165
                        brick base veneer: $50
                        rope/gasket:$50
                        IT materials:$45
beer:$113 (i only included what i drank while working)
                        saw:$250
                        blades:$300
TOTAL so far (not done yet BTW) $4,550.00
kitchen to put it in: not priceless

You have shamed us all and you are hurting the struggling Austin economy. You should spend all that money you saved and buy yourself something nice.
