Duraboard vs FB Board

Has anyone used or what are your thoughts on Duraboard which is rated for 1900 degrees in place of FB Board as your insulation beneath the firebrick?

Duraboard LD is a high quality ceramic fiber board made in the USA. Should work well in this application.

Duraboard is way to soft. Better to use Calcium Silicate board. Duraboard doesnt like moisture at all, but Cal Sil dries out fine.
I would not recommend fibre board at all.Duraboard is rated to 1260C.

Why do we need the fb board? If we have a double layer of brick are we ok without fb board? Or if fire brick on the edge is that enough insulation?

Brick is not insulative at all, except for insulation bricks. A standard fire brick is dense. The insulation board acts as a barrier to stop heat "wicking: from the oven itself.

Johnny is correct. Bricks are thermal mass. Insulation is, uhmm, insulation. The goal is to keep as much heat as possible IN the oven (not letting the heat escape). After the bricks heat up, the insulation surrounding the bricks keep the heat (energy) contained in the oven.

Without insulation under your floor, the heat leaks out of the floor into your concrete hearth and will keep your wood storage toasty warm - and cause you to use a HUGE amount of wood to heat up your oven.

Think about your home. Did the building contractor use bricks or some other solid building material to keep the heat in your house? Nope. He used material with insulating properties - pink rolls of fiberglass, fluffy blown stuff, styrofoam panels, etc. Same goes for your oven. Use the proper insulation ALL AROUND your oven - top, bottom and sides for a SUPER EFFICIENT oven that heats up quickly and MAINTAINS it's heat for days after your fire.
