  • oven Not hot enough

    hi ,

not sure what i did wrong ,any advice is appreciated .
my oven is not getting hot enough ,i can easily put my hand in the oven ,even touch the base .

i used all heat stop mix to make my oven ,from top to bottom ,
used 13 bags of heat stop mortar .

my first attempt to heat oven to raise heat was not successful ,
so i thought if i make my top of oven lower by adding more mortar ,and place a door will help the situation . but still not hot enough after of an hr of wood burning .
insulation is added ,and thickness of walls is approx 4 inch's

    attached images

    any advice

    thanks

    david..

Well, I am curious as to how much insulation you have below/around the oven - but lack of insulation doesn't explain the oven not getting hot. It just means it won't stay hot for very long.

So the problem is likely that you just haven't built a big enough fire/for long enough. Throw a couple more logs in there. It will get hot...

By the way, have you taken any temperature readings with an IR thermometer?

      Hi DIB,

Is your oven an igloo, barrel or some other design? I can't figure it out from the photos.
Is the height of the door half the the size of the height of the oven?

its more like an igloo, No, door not half the the size of the height of the oven,
but little more than half ? you think that is the problem .?
          attached more pics ,

          Thank you

The photos arent clear enough to give an indication of ratios used in the build but Id guess all the heat is just rushing straight out the top of the flue.

Mate, its hard to tell from the pics, but does the interior of your oven look anything like the sketch I've drawn below?
If so, I regret to say that my limited experience suggests it will never get hot enough.
As Brickie suggests, all the heat would go straight up the chimney.

is coming out of flute more when door closed ,but when door open
much more come out by door .

the surface not getting hot ,that i can touch the surface ,but its hot on top of the oven .

I think your oven is more of a standing fireplace than an oven, I'm sorry to say.

Yep, all the heat is just going out the flue.

My buddy has an old metal oven with the chimney in the middle of the dome that he converted for pizza. He has no problem getting it hot... it may not be efficient, but with enough BTU's I think you can get that design hot enough

I would suggest moving the fire to the back of the oven

Ovens that are wider than deep generally dont work too well.

The fire if built at the back licks over the oven roof on the way out the flue, well thats how its supposed to be, your flames wont have time to release any heat into the oven roof before they exit the flue.

The answer is to your problem is a rebuild, not what you want to hear I know.
