Soldiers on the bricks or around them?

Hello All,

I am getting ready to start my oven and have a couple of questions to get started.

1. Can I substitute FB board for the vermiculite isolator on top of a 6 inch slab?

2.Should I start the first course (soldiers) around the brick floor or on top to allow for the different expansion/contraction rates between the floor and the dome?

The adventure begins. You can use vermeculite in place of the Forno Bravo boards for insulation under your oven. The standard recommendation is to use 6 inches of V Crete as an equivalent to the 2 inch boards. You can put your dome on the oven floor but you won't be able to replace those bricks should the need arise. I placed my floor inside the dome and left a quarter inch gap for expansion which has since filled in with ash.

I meant using the FB Board instead of vermiculite on top of the 6" slab.

I use the Forno Bravo board underneath my oven. You'll need four sheets of it. I'm very satisfied with the performance.
