I recently experienced rain, fortunately I had the oven covered but a sample peace of cob was exposed and when I squeezed it I discovered it crumbled! Will this occur with my oven if ever uncovered in a rain? Should I plaster the exterior to weather proof? Thank you for any advice

Re: raining on cob
We are making a cob oven at the moment. I have all intentions of rendering it, and hoping that it will make it somewhat weather proof.
I've only gotten up to the first cob layer, though. I've still to add the straw insulation, then lastly, the render.
We live in the tropics with a decent wet season, so the oven will get a good test!
