We looked for a suckling pig for our last Christmas day lunch, the smallest they are allowed to kill and sell is around the 60kgs mark.

We went to all the really nice ethnic markets too in the hope, but you just cant get a small one.

Do you think the distance to the chimney will be too long? The fire will be in the back..
My oven looks like a coffin..

Is this the crossdraft you mentioned? Should I leave a gap between the oven's opening and the chimney's arch? I had no idea of this.. thought to just do it all in one piece..
    Yes, that's the one.

The gap is for a thermal break, its for retaining more heat in the oven, with your build I wouldnt bother.

Whats going to hold the oven roof up?

I don't know what to think. What the hell are you building? The good thing is that it is brick and it will probably stand and last forever...

A damper on the flue that is outside the oven is not really of much use because it draws both from the oven and the outside. When the door to the oven is placed either partially closed or fully closed it acts as a damper to the outer flue.

Will it be still be useful on an outside chimney or have no functionality? Just chucking more labor into the project haha

Yes, if the damper is fully closed that is exactly what will happen. But you open it fully to start, then partially close it as the heat builds up, then fully close it for retained heat cooking.

Ok I see. And also I don't get the damper part.. if you twist the damper on, won't the smoke just escape thru the front door?
