  • hearth bricks not perfectly flat

we poured a refractory concrete for the slab under the hearth bricks and as a result of the aggregate available to us (3/4 in basin) we had some bumps in the surface that even 1/2 in of sand/fireclay couldn't smooth out completely as a result the hearth has some slight unevenness in its surface, +/_ 1/16 in.
My question is this liveable with or should I pull everything off and re-pour a 1 in mortar just to achieve a smooth surface?

Wow...a 1/2" screed won't create a level surface? I wouldn't knock it out and repour, I'd get a surface grinder and flatten out the high spots.

You need insulation between the slab and your hearth anyway. Grind it flat(ter), then pour 4" of perlcrete over it.
