I recently bought several 15 lb pails of the premixed "Heat Stop 50" refractory mortar to seal the seams on my dome segments. The only reason I didnt use the Forno Bravo mortar is because it got rock hard while sitting in my garage for a season. Following Forno Bravos guidelines of using a bean thats 3/4" thick and 3 inches wide, I have applied a generous amount of HS50. I have since discovered that many people suggest only applying about 1/16 of an inch thick butter coat, upwards of 3/8th of an inch at maximum. This is what I hate about conflicting information. The advice I went by was from a guy at Mutual Materials in Seattle who sold me the stuff. Its now been 2 1/2 days and the outer layer of mortar is drying but beneath that surface crust (for a lack of better words) the inside is still soft like it was just applied. Will this stuff actually dry even if laid this thick? do I need to remove this and use something different? ive paused on putting the insulation blankets on because of this.
